SATYRICON: The MetalKult Interview
When MetalKult visited Norway last March, we were invited to visit the private studios of Norwegian black metal band Satyricon for a gear tour and the following in-depth question-and-answer session with frontman Satyr and drummer Frost.
Below, the pair discusses a wide range of topics, including the progression of Satyricon’s sound from traditional black metal to more straightforward rock, collaborating with Samoth and Thorns, and how “Satyricon has always been proudly a part of Norwegian black metal” even though Satyr wasn’t interested in doing what Mayhem’s Euronymous expected of him.
Satyricon also discuss the resolution of Frost’s visa troubles and their plans for recording their new full-length in Los Angeles. On June 2, U.K. and European fans were given a treat of what’s to come when Satyricon released a five-track EP, My Skin Is Cold, which included the new title track, “Live Through Me” and “Existential Fear-Questions” (excluded from 2002’s Volcano) and compelling live versions of “Mother North” and “Repined Bastard Nation.”

Really great interview, keep these black metal interviews going!!!!! They just keep getting better!!!!
Truelly an treasure indepth interview with the dark Lord musicians Frost/drums and Satyr/vocals, multi instrumentals of SATYRICON fame: I find the fiery dual energies of Leader/founder Satyr & Frost to be quite a powerful challenging amospheric Black Metal band. I only have “3″ of SATYRICON’s albums/Cd’s the 1st being “Now, Diabolical” it’s gripping tribal primal Heartbeat is spellbinding/very strong & darkly haunting/I love it! Fav songs “Darkness Shall Be Eternal & A New Enemy” etc.,.) then “Volcano sounds surreal/on the edge chilly/scary….’makes me cringe “Suffering the Tyrants” is my fav song track on this one & Nemesis Divina” -is hauntenly Symphonic Epic & tragedy very painful album also makes me cringe. I digg/like very much all the Satyricon’s recordings so mentioned/that I have bought for each have a unique vitality of their own & anxiously await their/Satyr & Frost SATYRICON’s newest music endeavor(s) to be release this year 2008 & the amospheric World tour that will surely back it up. I am also thrilled & very “pleased” to hear that Frost Visa travel paper works have been successfully resolved/cleared now the dark Lord Satyricon drummer can tour the USA along with his other music colleages, that’s great news! All the best to a very hard working band Satyricon & their music journey. Peace!-Ruby Red
thanks metalkult, you guys make the greatest and most original interviews with best bands
This interview was great. I have a whole new level of respect for Satyricon. Both Frost and Satyr are inspiring: so many times I get so hung up on trying to be a guitar god that I forget that it is about creativity, expression, and being a musician, not about meeting the standards of a ’scene’.
Metalkult, please continue doing great things like you do, it is appreciated!
