Mother North – MetalKult’s Journey to Norway
For four days in March 2008, MetalKult’s Brad Angle and Jimmy Hubbard took a journey to the grim-cold heart of Norwegian black metal: Oslo, Norway.
In this revealing four-part series, we catch up with a few of Norwegian black metal’s leading acts. We go on a pub crawl through Oslo’s hottest metal bars with 1349’s Seidemann (bass) and Archaon (guitar), visit Notodden’s ancient Heddal Stave Church, head off to Emperor/Zyklon drummer Trym’s Emperial Tattoo studios (where Hubbard gets some seriously Nordic needle-and-ink action), hang with Emperor vocalist/guitarist Ihsahn at his Symphonique Studios, tour the rebuilt Holmenkollen Chapel (which was burned in 1992 by members of the black metal community), go to Helvete (the late Mayhem guitarist Euronymous’ record store and informal black metal “inner circle” headquarters) and chat with Satyricon in their cavernous rehearsal studios.
Check out this rare glimpse into the lives of these artists below.
Many thanks to GuitarWorld.com forum moderator and Lotus bassist Øyvind Rasmussen for his expert (and impromptu) tour guide skills.

Nice! Quite interesting to see these bands from the inside.
And Norway looks a lot like Canada.
Great Video, can’t wait to see the others!!! Whose music is being played at the beginning of this video?
The beginning of the video features music from Burzum.
Nice works fellows!
mother north aint in oslo, this is more our most cosmopol/european city of all, u wanna visit mother north go west/Vestlandet, this is the coldness, withits inhospitality and wasteland that fits, go the fjords, and mountains, go the distance between people, not akershus festning with kingsoldiers
part 2 is not showing up at all….its only part 1
Great work on this video! Ihsahn is an insanely talented musician. He pulls off that short hair look with class! I wish Ihsahn much success with his new album! Ihsahn is fascinating, I could listen to Ihsahn talk about his refrigerator magnet collection and be fully entertained.
Norway’s landscape is pretty grim but Alaska is four times as big and has ten times the frozen grimness. Sadly Alaska has nearly zero black metal musicians.
[…] some footage from the studio detailing the gear he used to record he latest album, “angL” at MetalKult. The footage is part 2 of a 4 part mini-documentary about Norwegian […]
I love Norway!!!!
[…] Daily black metal videos, eh? The Metalkult website has been posting up videos from their trip to Norway over the last couple of days; there’s been two so far and there are two more yet to come. The first one includes a studio tour with Satyr and Frost from Satyricon and today’s clip features a gear tour with Ihsahn from Emperor. Tomorrow’s video features a tour of Trym from Emperor’s tattoo parlour and the day after that there’ll be rehearsal footage of 1349, I think. Pretty cool, although I wish they’d stop showing footage of Norway’s grim, desolate highways Enjoy! MetalKult Mother North – MetalKult’s Journey to Norway, Part 2: IHSAHN Studio Tour […]
Muito foda
satyr looked mellow & wimpy compared to his video evil personality. is this a gimmick or duel person.
That would be so sick to have a Trym tatoo.
What is the last song that they play at the end of video 3?
Great documentary!
The opening song is from Burzum “Det Som En Gang Var” from the “Hvis Lyset Tar Oss” EP.
Holy shit, Satyr cut his hair AGAIN.
great, now I want to get a tattoo done by Trym.

Awesome. Hail Norway.
GUITAR WORLD - MetalKult.com is a real chilly diamond that focas on the heavy extreme Master musicians artists/bands that vitality & deep rich vibes is showcase wonderously with awe “here” at the MetalKult.com. I enjoyed the technical music Studio interviews with Frost & Satyr of Satyricon in Part 1 (also the Indepth Interview on them is awesome! Thanks.) as I did Part 2 the Studio Interview with Ihsahn of Emperor (his featured in the recent Guitar World/August 2008 issue…’really nice!) I found both of their music Studio gear-tech tour chat quite intriqueing & fascinating. Part 3 Emperor/Zyklon Drummer Tyrm is a mystery man of talents made me cringe seeing the young person arm getting tatooted & Part 4 was a nice treat seeing that the haunting 1349 Archeon & Seidermann were in high Spirits showing the Guitar World/MetalKult guests a joyful time in Norway’s must famous Pubs/Venues. All in all it was a special treat seeing the lovely NORWAY Country sights &j ust a fine portion of the some of their most haunting darkly Black Metal musicians artists/bands that are from there: “thanks” for the chilly special on Norway’s darkly musicians it was a true treasure. Peace and once again, a big thank you!
Once all the footage of flags, highways and episode numbers etc… is taken out, there is little substance.
Interesting.
Hi friends, greetings from Brzilians Black metal fans !!!!!
