Exclusive NILE Guitar Riff Lesson

Nile

Nile Ithyphallic

On August 21, 2007, when South Carolina’s Nile played an Ozzfest one-off date at BB King’s, in support of their new album Ithyphallic (Nuclear Blast), we invited guitarist/vocalists Karl Sanders and Dallas Toler-Wade to stop by MetalKult’s Manhattan headquarters for an in-depth Q&A and riff lesson.

The two technical death metal shredders accepted, and, axes in hand, stopped by our New York offices to demonstrate the key elements of their style, and show how to play Nile classics like “Barra Edinazzu,” “Howling of the Jinn,” “Black Seeds of Vengeance” and more!

Don’t like their tone at all. Its all crunch. Their riffs sound better when they play them slow.

It’s very cool to see these videos. I am Nile’s guitar tech and remember that day… while I was setting up gear at BB Kings, our tour manager handed me $40 and told me to catch a cab to Guitar World’s offices to deliver picks to Karl who neglected to bring any, not knowing he and Dallas were actually going to have to play. They had assumed it was an interview only.

Karl and Dallas are amazing players. True, some of what you see on these videos seems a bit sloppy but that’s just because they are normal, down to earth, working class guys from SC… guys that might have felt a little out of place being videoed in Guitar World’s NYC studio. Sit down in a hotel or on the bus with either of them, unplugged, and the precision and speed is astounding. It’s also amazing because they are tuned lower than the guitar is physically designed for and thus, one must have an extremely precise touch to actually play in tune. Karl’s guitars are especially impossible with the scalloped necks and light gauge strings on the top end. It was nearly impossible for me to actually tune his main guitar (Dean ML) because of this and the thin neck. You can tune it perfectly but if you hold the guitar at any angle, move or press down on the strings like you would a normal guitar, there’s no way to play it in tune. How he does it is beyond me. It drove me crazy every day, trying to get everything perfect and only being successful about 10% of the time! It does my heart good to see him, out of tune in these videos, knowing he tuned it himself! Personally, I don’t anyone but he could play his guitars!

I do wish there was a video of “Ithyphallic”, where Karl uses the 11 string fretless (top part of the double neck) though. That’s another wild ass guitar and no one can play or ever thought of playing really. Other than having to change the strings, that guitar, like all the custom KRK guitars Nile uses, is extremely solid and stays in tune very well. By the way, the bottom part of the guitar, the six string Karl is playing here, he NEVER used on stage. Only once when Dallas called out the wrong song on the set list, did Karl play that lower half of the guitar and he suffered all the way through the song until I could switch him over to the ML. So… the fact that he had to play it on these videos probably handicapped him a little!

Thanks for the vids and letting me make these comments!

Oops…. I guess I spoke too soon! I just found the “interview” section of this article where Karl does indeed play the 11 string fretless on, “Ithyphallic”! Cool! Oh and another correction, the guitar is a KXK, not a KRK. Sorry… sometimes I type too fast!

Wow….metal for us old guys…..that being metal with precision and melody and intelligence. The guy that called it sloppy….well, adolescence is something he’ll get past eventually. Thanx to GW for sending this to me! Thanx to Ish for his enlightening comments regarding the clips and his personal involvement.

so…..does anyone know where to get strings with those gauges? Ish, if you know let us know. I’m tuned down to B w/ the heaviest strings I can find and its pretty loose. Especially the 3rd. Karl probably hand makes his own in his basement w/ nothing but his two hands and a papyri reed. These guys DOMINATE!!
