IHSAHN: The MetalKult Interview
When MetalKult visited Norway last March, we were privileged to have the rare opportunity to visit with Emperor guitarist/vocalist Ihsahn at his Symphonique Studios in Notodden, Norway.
While we were there we got a tour of the gear Ihsahn used to record his latest solo album, angL (Candlelight/Mnemosyne), before sitting down with the black metal legend for a lengthy interview.
In the following clips, Ihsahn discusses a diverse range of topics, including the roots of angL’s aggressive sound, his collaboration with Opeth’s Mikael Akerfeldt and how the “black metal expression” had to come from rural, isolated places like Notodden.

great interview.
im still waiting for my copy of Angl to get home but i have great expectations.
I hate hearing that Emperor is no more. MORE Emperor!!!! (though I do like his solo shit as well)
I love the comment he made while talking about his string gauges that his 10 gauges weren’t “Zakk Wylde size”.
Seeing Emperor when they did their final tour was one of the greatest shows I have ever seen. I really hope that eventually their will be an Ihsahn tour.
[…] previously reported, MetalKult.com has posted a video interview with former EMPEROR guitarist/singer […]
Great interview. But after reading the article in Guitar World first I now realize how much the interviewers twist, chang, and add to what was really said. Shame on Guitar World for doing that. I’m finally glad I got to experience the interview for myself.
It was truelly an indepth treasure Interview on legendary Black Metal musician guitarist/vocalist Ishahn of EMPEROR fame, etc.,. discussing his music journey, life & Solo music projects etc.,. The captivating interview on the famous musician Ihsahn (beautiful/strong name) with the Guitar World/MetalKult.com Editor Jimmy Hubbard was emotional rich & potent as is the “more” indepth Coverage on Ihsahn in the GUITAR WORLD August 2008 issue (musician Dan Donagan of DISTURBED fame is on the cover)..’ titled “EMPEROR Of the North” by Brad Angle (cool name..’I guess it’s pronounce Angel) & Photogrphs by Jimmy Hubbard (very “warm & serene” treasure pix of Ihsahn w/his shades on even though it is mentioned it was quite “cold” in his lovely Homeland of NORWAY in the rural town of Notodden, Norway). I found the GW interview & the above MetalKult visual/video (which is “edited” some I believe & that’s alright for the GW interview goes more indepth gives the full interview) both are very heavy “vital” coverage on Ihsahn music history/Career: so nothing is off balance with neither one of the Interviews in which GUITAR WORLD mag & MetalKult.com (in which is associated with/and a heavy part of GW Official Website) done fantasticly. The musician IHSAHN is quite a quiet storm “Emperor” of a man/musician and very cool/hip one at that…’wishing him & his former EMPEROR music colleaques drummer Trym (his also is interviewed in the GW MetalKult.com) and guitarist Sammoth a well rounded music journey as they done so “successfully” with EMPEROR who knows even though Ihsahn said that “Emperor is at rest/in bed & completed their music quest” is still maybe something there that they didn’t know about and therefore needs to be awaken. Anyway, IHSAHN Solo music journey & quests endeavors sounds like another dark mystery/treasure, winner and wish him/Ihsahn & the musicians bassist Lars Norberg (formerly of Satyricon fame) and drummer Mickelson (both whom are in the progressive Metal band Spiral Architect) that participated on IHSAHN “angL” newest album/Cd the best. Peace & “thanks” again, Guitar World & MetalKult for a nicely, warm & chilly journey adventure to NORWAY & the mystery/haunting fame musicians/bands you had the guts/a challenge to interview. THANKS!
Is it just me, or does anyone else think Ihsahn would make an awesome replacement for Tom G. Warrior in Celtic Frost (should they dare continue without such a visionary)? Just listen to some of the stuff on angl…
