Emperor Lesson

When Norwegian black metal legends Emperor came to America for a brief tour this past June, guitarists Ihsahn and Samoth took time out of their schedule to stop by MetalKult’s New York City headquarters for an in-depth lesson on how to play some of their band’s most memorable passages.

Among the songs they demonstrated were “I Am the Black Wizards,” “Curse You All Men!” “Thus Spake the Nightspirit,” “Inno a Satana” and others. Check out the full video lesson (with tablature included) below.

    It is vivid to any eye, why they are the emperors of this wonderfully dark music genera….They are articulate where their contemporaries are not…. Profoundly dark, instead of just heavy….And in the place of the pompously extreme element, they have crafted a music so intricate that it is only to be understood fully by the subconscious! Thus to be surmised that to love the true affects, that indescribable magic only provided through truly superb music…. It is to realize it master craftsmen….All hail the Emperors of Black metal, the true masters of all superb music!!!

    absolutley amazing stuff. great to se them play like this!
    emperor made me want to play the guitar, so i bought one and the scattered ashes tab book. and i love it!
    i’m hoping to see another tab book out soon.

    I’ll forego the obligatory carrying on about how much I think that Emperor rules, and get straight to the point. I thought this footage was interesting, but not just because I’m an Emperor fan… in fact, I’m not even a guitarist and I still found it to be highly enjoyable! I liked how they explained the way they thought about music, their approach to songwriting, etc. and especially how completely good-natured and MELLOW they seem to be!

    If only Satan knew…

    Thank you very much. These videos are superb. For an Emperor fan like me, it’s a dream having this guys there explaining their way to play, showing the entrails of their songs. Ten years ago, I’d have killed for this viedos!!!!!

    Thank you to the guys from Guitar World for starting this website and following through on a great idea. Thank you to Ishan and Samoth for taking the time help teach and inspire Emperor fans again and again.
    This video is a GOATsend even for someone like myself, someone that already has the Scattered Ashes tab book and the live dvd. The more information that I can get my hands on the better (happier) I will be.
    I must say, for years and years now I have been frustrated by the lack of transcriptions for high-class black metal bands like Emperor, Immortal, Satyricon etc. It seems odd to me that when the bands that created the 2nd wave of black metal were actually MAKING the music, no one cared but a few thousand random people like me, and people either didn’t listen, or they just laughed.
    The only people laughing now are those of us who knew then what others are just admitting now. Better late than never, I guess…

    Damm, i cant figure out how ihsanh plays the inno a satan intro or verse :p Does anybody have CORRECT tabs for it ? If somebody does, please send them to emperory@hotmail.com
