It was the summer of 1988, and Slayer were in the midst of their World Sacrifice Tour in support of their latest release, South of Heaven. On the 31st of August, the tour came to New York City’s Felt Forum, the small theater adjacent to Madison Square Garden—and mayhem ensued.

Toward the end of the main set, during “Ghosts of War,” the overly enthusiastic crowd began tearing up seat cushions and hurling them in all directions, many of them reaching the stage. As the danger level escalated, the band made a quick retreat to the backstage area. The seat cushions continued flying throughout the arena, and after a few minutes frontman Tom Araya came out and gave the crowd a piece of his mind.

“You guys came here to have a good time, and you’re blowin’ it, big time! Why don’t you give us a break? We can probably never play here again.”

Immediately following Araya’s rant, the band launched into the final song of the night, “Angel of Death,” while continuing to dodge the dangerous projectiles.

This following bootleg video shows all of Araya’s tongue lashing as well as “Angel of Death.” And Slayer never did play the Felt Forum again.

    I ‘m the guy who videotaped this back then. It was on my first of many video cameras over the years, a Sony 8mm, model # V5. It had a 6x optical zoom and I used a Realistic 33-1065 external mic. 19 years later, it’s “news” on here and on Blabbermouth. :-)

    The Boston show at The Orpheum on the same tour had signs posted at the door that were signed by the band pleading with the audience not to destroy the place!
    So metal!!!

    I don’t really know much about slayer, but all I know is that Kerry King, sucks, I mean the guys can’t even teach a good lesson, and the only thing he does good is play power chords, even Santana is a better guitarist that this baldheaded dude, he probably got brain damage from all those tatoos.

    fans destroying venue means
    a) band not able to play again
    b)band not being able to play in other venues across country perhaps

    I was there too. I have a scar from a stage diver’s boot ripping a gash over my eye. That was one of the craziest mosh pits I’d ever seen. There were three separate pits most of the night and then when they did Angel of Death it turned in to one big crazy pit. I also remember the bouncers were being total assholes all night. That may have contributed to the cushion throwing, but I don’t know. The vandalism was still stupid either way, but come on, listening to Slayer just makes you want to break shit.

    I was atn the show and it was incredible. It was sad that a few asses had to trash the place but Slayer played their hearts out and did the best they could in a tough situation
