Before ANYONE goes off half-cocked… I am a “metalhead” from “back in the day”… learned ‘Dethroned Emperor’ when it was a new release! The musicianship has progessed in the last 20-something years ( one could only hope!) but what is the deal? I have been a Christian for the last 15 or so years ( albeit still ‘rough around the edges”). Is all the Satanic crap really neccesary? I do not attend a church ( never been made overly welcome… I still ‘look the part’ of a metalhead… even with a haircut after 20 years…), but still in all…
I just don’t understand why they couldn’t just kick ass musically, and do the whole “theatrical” bit… but maybe find some OTHER subject material? Pushing one “religious view” is about the same as another, eh? And what is the deal anyways? Clergy run buck wild in Scandinavia beating on people, or what? I was fairly impressed with the music ( the Immortal video) as the first “Black Metal” I have heard in almost 20 years… but just do not understand the need for the “Black” aspect… why not just “Metal”? It almost seems like rebellious teens that never grew up; religious zealots in their own form and fashion; or option #3 ( and the least likely I think…) posers trying for the “shock factor”…
Since I may never pass this way again, I am compelled to comment… vocals are the Achilles heel ( new meaning to “Frog in the throat”!), and I actually met Phil Anselmo years ago ( about 2 years before ‘Cowboys from Hell’) in my hometown of Baton Rouge… he is a super-nice guy with an awesome voice… am curious to check out his band Down…
Anyone losing their minds over my comments… trying to damn me to Hellfire… blah blah blah… “Whatever!” and “Holy Hockeystix, get a life!”

Great band. If you don’t like true black metal, you won’t like Immortal. It’s pretty simple. If you don’t understand the social circumstances from which black metal arose, which in turn explains why they embrace the ideologies they do, then you just won’t get it. That said, if you’re so adamant about bands not touching on religion, why not look past it to the superb musicianship?
