Live Kult: Classic 1985 Slayer Videos

Classic Slayer

Ultimate Revenge

Home videos of underground metal bands weren’t exactly commonplace in 1985, but that didn’t stop Combat Records from issuing The Ultimate Revenge on VHS that year. The now legendary and out of print home video (click the cover to the right for a larger view) featured concert clips of Slayer, Venom and Exodus, who were touring the U.S. together on the Combat Tour Live.

The Slayer and Exodus performances on the video were filmed at the former disco haven Studio 54 in New York City on April 3, 1985, while the Venom clips came from other sources since guitarist Mantas was unable to appear at the April 3 concert, forcing Venom to use two fill-in guitarists in his absence and not wanting the live footage from that night to appear on the home video. Slayer and Venom (Cronos and Abaddon) were also featured on The Ultimate Revenge in backstage interview clips.

Below, check out the four Slayer songs that appeared on The Ultimate Revenge, as well as their chaotic backstage interview segment and an amusing Combat Records commercial that appeared at the end of the home video.

The video player requires Flash 8 Player or later. Please download the latest Flash Player.

man, this stuff is awesome, but it’s not like it’s so rare that anyone should get excited about it. Hell, it’s available damn near everywhere and always has been.

Few words can describe the haunting sounds of Hell Awaits and Chemical Warfare. In my opinion the two songs sound better than the studio version. Why can’t metal be this bad ass anymore? If anyone knows where I can get a copy of this (preferably on dvd) please let me know. Turn it up and piss off your neighbors. Long live the SLAYTANIC WEHRMACHT!

I really wanted to them at this show in NYC!! I had seen them Later with the Cromags in 86…But it wasn’t this tour!!

It’s great to see that Slayer have continued to grow and evolve as a band and as musicians but without forsaking their brutal thrash roots, not like another band who’s name we all know that shared the thrash limelight with them back in the early days and have steadily served up steaming heaps of dogshit ever since their bassist (and most talented member) died. I like how Dave said they’ll never change their style of music. Still as true today as it was back then.

These Slayer songs are from the Combat Ultimate Revenge Tour video which also featured a few songs by Venom and Exodus. Kick Ass video to say the lease. The follow up video Combat released after this one had Raven, Forbidden, Death, Faith or Fear, and Dark Angel.
