Classic Kult: CELTIC FROST’s The Making of Morbid Tales

Celtic Frost

Morbid Tales

On May 7, 2007, MetalKult met Celtic Frost guitarist/vocalist Thomas Gabriel Fischer and bassist Martin Eric Ain at their hotel near The Fillmore East at Irving Plaza in NYC. Frost were on the third leg of their international tour behind 2006’s brutal return to form Monotheist, this time in support of headliners Type O Negative.

After arriving at Ain’s room—and enduring a tense moment when we had to rouse the sleeping metal giant from his pre-show slumber—Fischer showed up and the two extreme metal pioneers soon warmed to our cameras and revealed the events that surrounded the creation of arguably one of extreme metal’s most influential records, 1984’s Morbid Tales.

In this four-part, 25 minute interview, Fischer and Ain talk about their formation in the cold-war Eighties, the gear they used to conjure Morbid Tales‘ “inhuman” sounds and how they inadvertently created one of the one of extreme metal’s most influential albums.

Celtic Frost are indeed pioneers and innovators of this genre we call heavy metal, be it death/black/doom/whatever. It’s all fucking heavy metal and Frost can be called true revolutionaries.

Its completely insane to ever ever ever need to champion CELTIC FROST. Their outtakes and throwaways could send most of these talentless motherfuckers in the game nowadays back to flippin fuckin burgers. Welcome back, lets hope some of them wonder to fuckin close to your stage and get melted.

Please put the camerman’s back to the window and have the subjects face the camera. Thus putting light on the subject and eliminating the distracting backlight situation. This has only been known by photographers since the invention of the camera.

Hello to Metal Kult! The CELTIC FROST interview is really interesting, some great thanx for doing this! Great! It also reminds me of course of the old days and the day I bought the Morbid Tales EP back then. Phew… great memories, magic moments and thats what Morbid Tales offers most in my opinion: Magic! At that time they weren´t the great musicians but they had the feeling for playing with strong and intense vibes and also the talent of writing a song to create moods. Well, again thanx for three piece video interview and continue working on this great site!
    Greetings from Germany
