In 1985, San Francisco’s Possessed released their now-legendary death metal debut Seven Churches.
Not only did Seven Churches‘ blend of thrash riffs, grunting vocals and blistering leads send shockwaves of excitement throughout the underground tape-trading scene of the day, but the album’s final track, “Death Metal”—and Possessed’s 1984 demo of the same name—just may have given an official name to the genre that had already spawned such American bands as Death, Morbid Angel and Master.

Thrash pioneers Megadeth have announced their first U.S. headline dates in support of the Roadrunner Records release United Abominations. The band has just taken Europe by storm, having played across the continent last month to hundreds of thousands at some of the largest and most renowned summer festivals, including Download, Rock IM Park and Rock AM Ring.
“We are back and we are serious, and we are coming to see you as soon as we can,” Dave Mustaine commented on Megadeth.com upon returning home this past weekend. See below for tour dates. (more…)
Genre-defying metal act Yakuza announce an August 7 release date for their new album, Transmutations (Prosthetic).
“Exploration, experimentation, riding the line between the familiar and the foreign; the essential elements for Yakuza have already been established,” frontman Bruce Lamont says. “We are not interested in creating music that’s not easily definable. Our roots are firmly planted in metal - yes, but like life, the sounds here are not cut and dry. At times this record can be uplifting, cruel, celebratory and just downright fuckin’ mean.”

Vancouver, BC-based heavy metal warriors 3 Inches of Blood make their Billboard debut this week as their new album Fire Up the Blades (Roadrunner) lands at #147 on the Top 200. In addition, the band soars to #2 on both the top new artist and current hard music charts, as well as #20 on the top hard music chart, shifting nearly 6,000 units.
